BIGA
A Catalan political party formed by wealthy merchants and their supporters.
BLACK DEATH
An epidemic of bubonic plague that killed millions of people in the 14th century.
BOURGEOISIE
The wealthy social class of merchants and property owners.
BUSCA
A Catalan party supported by small merchants, craftsmen and por people.
CAÑADA
A route along which sheep were taken long distances to graze.
CLERGY
The body of people holding a position of religious authority in the Church.
CONSULADO DEL MAR
A Catalan-Aragonese office regulating commerce.
CORTES
A representative assembly made up of members of the nobility, clergy and important citizens.
DINASTY
A succession of monarchs from the same family who hold power from one generation to another.
FUERO
A charter ( a body of laws and privileges) that was granted by a monarch, for example to new cities.
MESTA
An association of the wealthy owners of sheep farms that supervised the migration of sheep across Castilla.
MONARCHY
A system of government in which a king or queen holds political authority.
MUDEJAR
1.       A Muslim who lived in one of the Iberian Christian kingdoms.
2.       An artistic style in the Christian kingdoms that was influenced by Muslim art.
PEASANT
An agricultural worker, who was sometimes free and sometimes a serf.
RECONQUEST
The recovery of territory from Al-Andalus by Christian armies between the 8 th and 15 th centuries. This became known as the Teconquista in Spanish.
REMENSA
Catalan peasants who revolted in the 15 th century.
REPARTIMIENTO
1.       During the Iberian Reconquest, he distribution of conquered lands to the nobility and the militar orders.
2.       In America, the distribution of the native inhabitants and their land to Spanish conquerors.

A rebellion.
TRANSHUMANCE
The long-distance movement of people with their livestock from one region to another.
VICEROY
A Royal oficial who ruled a very large territory called a Viceroyalty in the name of the monarch.
